Most skin experts agree that eating twice daily is the best practice. "You should brush twice a day, in the morning and evening," says dermatologist and Dawn Attewell Aesthetics founder RN Dawn Attewell The reason for the overlap is that AM and PM purges serve different purposes.
"It's important to wash your face in the morning to remove excess oil," says Dr. Elif Pinar, dermatologist and founder of Dr. Elif Clinic. "In the evening, I recommend a double cleanse to remove makeup, SPF, and debris and toxins that have accumulated on the skin's surface throughout the day."
As the name implies, double cleansing entails using one product to dissolve surface makeup and dirt and then another to thoroughly cleanse your skin. Brackenbury agrees that double-cleaning is a good idea for nighttime cleaning. "This is due to the skin being exposed to and bombarded with environmental influences such as pollution, dirt, and daytime dirt that adheres to the skin, as well as SPF and makeup."
Is it permissible to wash your face once a day?
After going to bed with clean skin twice, you may be wondering if washing your face in the morning is absolutely necessary. However, sleeping is a dirtier job than you might think. "Washing your face in the morning can help prevent a buildup of bacteria from your pillow or hair overnight," explains Atewell.
"The morning wash will also remove excess oil from the skin, preventing blemishes and breakouts and allowing the ingredients to be absorbed by our skin."
The only exception to this rule is if you have extremely sensitive skin that becomes irritated and inflamed as a result of excessive cleansing. If this is the case, how often should you wash your face? "Excessive washing of the skin can cause irritation, dryness, and that 'tight' feeling that occurs when the skin's natural oils are stripped," says Dr. Pinar.
"If twice a day is too much for your skin type, cut it down to once an evening."
However, this should not be the case for the vast majority of people. If your skin feels tight after washing it, using a gentle cleanser instead of skipping the morning wash may be a better first step.
How can you tell when you clean too much?
A great skincare routine starts with learning how frequently to cleanse, but you can overdo good things. According to Aparna Salaskar, a cosmetic and laser therapist at Aesthetics International, "You don't need to wash your face more than twice a day. Any more than that can dry out your skin."
This is due to "over-cleansing damages the skin's protective barrier, leaving the skin weak and allowing bad bacteria to thrive, causing breakouts, as well as stripping the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and dehydrated, which can cause tenderness...and redness," claims Brackenbury.
It can be tempting to over-cleanse, whether you use an ultra-fine cleanser, have acne-prone skin, or just enjoy the fresh, foamy face wash feeling. But for everyone, twice a day is really the maximum.

Is it acceptable to only wash your face with water?
According to Dr. Victoria Manning of River Aesthetics, washing with water alone produces the sensation of cleansing but not the benefits. Water alone will not cleanse your skin or break down these oils that have built up throughout the day, according to our experts, who also agree that there is no harm in an H20 refreshing spray, but it is not a replacement for the real thing.
According to Brackenbury, "it's kind of like rinsing dirty dishes with just water and putting them away in the cupboard to have them ready to use again."
WHAT IS THE BEST EVERYDAY CLEANER?
We've discussed how frequently you should wash your face and the purpose of each cleanse; the final piece of the puzzle is what to wash with. Much of this is determined by skin type, as the best cleanser for acne will differ from the formula required for dehydrated skin or rosacea.
Salakser recommends the best cleansing oils for an all-arounder that can be used morning and night, as they "are great for removing traces of makeup and dirt as they bond with impurities on the skin."
Brackenbury suggests using balms that transform into a milky texture, as well as "cleansers that contain enzymes to aid the removal of dead skin cells, which can trap dirt and impurities causing breakouts and the skin to loot."
Some cleansers are better suited to specific times of day if you want to take a more targeted approach. "I highly recommend using a gentle cleanser in the morning and an exfoliant in the evening," Dr. Manning says. Gentle skincare acids, according to Dr. Benar, make excellent PM washes.
"An AHA [alpha hydroxy acid] cleanser is great for daily use, once in the evening," she recommends. "AHAs weaken the bonds that hold dead skin cells together, brightening the skin, evening the tone, reducing fine lines, and improving hydration."
