Lets Find Out Why Fall Is The Best Fashion Season

Every new season is exciting, though some are more so than others. Winter brings with it holiday celebrations to look forward to, from Christmas to Valentine's Day, while spring brings with it the promise of thawing snow, longer days, and shorter hemlines.

Well, summer is summer. But as we transition from carefree summer sunshine to dropping temperatures and 4 p.m. sunsets, fall has the worst reputation of all, and no amount of cashmere sweaters or pumpkin spice lattes can change that. Many people associate the season with gloom and ignore a genuine opportunity that lies in the changing (and yes, falling) of the leaves: dressing up.

I grew up in the Caribbean, but I was always conscious of fall's fashion potential. Since I could think, I've been interested in fashion, so it seemed unfair to me that while other people could mark the change of the seasons with a new jacket or sheer tights, I was only permitted the occasional hoodie or ankle boot. In college, I began to understand that fall style wasn't just about the weather; rather, it was a way of thinking.

Why should I be restricted to wearing two-piece suits or a maxi dress just because the temperature is 85 degrees? In order to embrace layering, I changed my wardrobe from tank tops and flowy dresses to leather jackets and long sleeve shirts.

My go-to resource for advice on layering was Leandra Medine's Man Repeller, which included a column titled "Lessons In Layering." It showed me how to combine tank tops of different lengths to create a minidress or how to pair a pencil miniskirt with a cotton dress.

Later, when I did relocate to New York, I realized I had been correct the entire time. A ribbed knit halter bodysuit suddenly became just another layer to keep piling onto, knee-high socks entered my fashion vocabulary, and I could finally wear my beloved leather jackets in their proper environment, even though I had a closet that was mostly black. This was all due to the cooler temperatures.

The fall fashion weeks are when the season's sartorial prowess is best on display; a mash-up of oddball ensembles featuring items that would never be paired together otherwise, but which actually act as a flex of styling muscles.

For instance, the fall 2022 collection at Miu Miu featured knee-high socks, ballet flats, and polo shirts appropriate for Blair Waldorf's PE class; at Bottega Veneta, tank dresses with thigh-high slits and ruffled hems; and at Marc Jacobs, larger-than-life pink denim over a slinky silver bralette. The options are essentially limitless.

Fall is a truly special time to layer up and play with fashion because it's the only season without climatological difficulties (unless hurricane season gets in the way) — summer brings intolerable heat, and winter only brings darkness and dirty snow.

Would you like to wear a leather miniskirt over the white shirt dress so that the hemline of the skirt shows a little bit? Try it out. Would you like to watch a matinée of Don't Worry, Darling while decked out entirely in leather? ‘ The time has come. Looking forward to a slip dress and boots occasion?

One benefit of fall styling is that it enables us to trade in our current identities in favor of our desired ones in terms of fashion. When the weather is pleasant, there are fewer obstacles in the way of our desire to fully express ourselves through clothing, allowing us to experiment with different facets of our personalities or even adopt a new look.

We would be stuck transitioning into winter without any dress-up fun if it weren't for this annual exercise that forces people to be honest with their personal style through transitional dressing. Streets, bars, cafés, offices, and trains then turn into a daily moodboard of fashion inspiration when style personalities start to play.

Fall fashion this year is especially exciting, moving away from the gimmicky, somewhat ultra-slinky Y2K revival styles of the previous two years in favor of a variety of options that highlight the best of individual style: metallic colors and materials, menswear-inspired tailoring that somehow feels fresh, Barbiecore pink, head-to-toe biker chic leather, skirt suits, '80s shoulder pads, Gossip Girl-ready preppy fashion, and opulent outerwear that
